How can I help?

Godric C. Sam Otuh, independent life insurance producer

Your situation

  1. If something happened to me, God forbid, what do I have in place right now to take care of my family, if anything?
  2. If something happened to me tomorrow, who would be the first person to feel it financially?

What's at stake

  1. If I'm confident my kids, or whoever in my family, would be able to cover the bills, would that be something I'd want them worrying about while they're already dealing with losing me?
  2. If they couldn't cover everything, what might they have to let go of first: the home, their plans, or their time together?

What it would mean

  1. If I had coverage in place that took care of all that, how would it feel to know my family's plans would go on no matter what?
  2. Of everything I just thought about, what matters most to me to protect, and why?

    Know Your Options

A quick look at the three types of life insurance in the estimator.

    Term Life

    • Pure protection for a set period, such as 20–30 years.
    • Typically the lowest-cost option.
    • No cash value.
    • Coverage ends when the term ends.

Product features and rules vary by state and carrier.

    Whole Life

    • Permanent coverage for your whole life.
    • Premiums never rise.
    • Builds cash value you can borrow against.
    • Typically the most expensive option.
    • Final expense is just a smaller form of whole life, typically used for burial costs and/or remaining debts.

Product features and rules vary by state and carrier.

    IUL (Indexed Universal Life)

    • Permanent coverage.
    • Cash value growth is tied to a market index, such as the S&P 500. (For context, the S&P 500 has historically averaged around 10% a year over the long run.)
    • Gains are subject to a cap; a floor (often 0%) means index losses aren't credited in a down year.
    • Policy fees and charges still apply and can reduce cash value.
    • Growth can be near zero if the index underperforms.

Product features and rules vary by state and carrier.

    Mortgage Protection

Even if coverage doesn't wipe out the entire balance, it can keep your family in the home for six months or more — the average time it takes a realtor to sell a house — giving them room to grieve and sell at fair equity value instead of selling at a loss.

Many families choose it because they don't want their regular life insurance or employer coverage drained to pay off the house — mortgage protection keeps those policies intact for other needs.

Coverage starts at a few dollars a day — see your number in two minutes.

Product features and rules vary by state and carrier.

    Understanding Indexed Universal Life

Indexed universal life is permanent life insurance. Its main purpose is a death benefit for the people you love.

    Why I Got Coverage

    • My 20-year term policy: $500,000 coverage · about $35/month
    • My IUL: $50,000 starting death benefit · projections not guaranteed

At 29, I realized I was spending more on takeout and drinks every month than on protecting my family, so I started with a 20-year term policy: $500,000 of coverage for about $35 a month, with critical illness, chronic illness, and terminal illness riders activated.

The deeper I got into the insurance business, the more I heard about IUL, and the more I talked to people on the phone who were too sick at 65 to get coverage, who thought they had it through their job, or who thought they had more time. It starts with a $50,000 death benefit, and the carrier's illustration projects $282,328 by age 65, with $231,417 in cash value after $72,827 in total premiums, assuming a 7.43% index rate (not guaranteed). For context, the S&P 500 has averaged around 10% a year historically, though an IUL is credited only part of that growth because of caps. It also includes critical, chronic, and terminal living benefits plus over loan protection. Those IUL figures are projections, not guarantees, so the actual amounts could end up higher or lower.

    — Godric C. Sam Otuh, Licensed Life Insurance Agent

My term premium and IUL premium are separate. IUL projections come from the carrier's illustration, are not guaranteed, and depend on index performance and policy charges. Living benefits and cash value access depend on the policy, carrier, and state.

Disclosures: Figures are based on my personal IUL and the carrier's illustration. Cash value and death benefit are not guaranteed and may be higher or lower. This page is educational only and is not an offer to sell insurance. Guarantees are backed solely by the issuing insurer. Licensed in CO, PA, and TX.
